Mississippi is a state located in the southeastern region of the United States.  It is bordered by Tennessee to the north, Alabama to the east, the Gulf of Mexico and Louisiana to the south, and Arkansas and Louisiana to the west. The state's western boundary is largely defined by the Mississippi River. Jackson, with a population of approximately 167,000 people, is both the state's capital and largest city.

Mississippi has never been known for its gleaming transportation network, but the situation today is worse than ever. Across the state, residents now have to circumvent nearly 500 closed bridges that have been declared unsafe, according to the Mississippi Office of State Aid Road Construction. Another 1,742 are posted with specific weight limits because of structural deficiencies. Combined, that accounts for more than 20 percent of the county and local bridges in the state.

Mississippi has among the highest percentage of rural roads in poor condition in the nation, according to a new report.  The findings by TRIP, a national transportation research group, lists Mississippi tied with New Mexico for fifth among the 50 states. In each state, 25 percent of the rural roads are in poor condition under criteria used for the report.
